Before beginning work on The Dark Knight Rises, Christian Bale starred in a big-budget Chinese movie called The Flowers of War by Zhang Yimou. The movie is based off of a historical novel about the Nanking Massacre, and centered around a group of prostitutes who take the place of female students who were chosen to be “escorts” for troops.
This trailer however, seems to focus on the large-scale war scenes in the movie, and less attention is paid to the women’s roles. I wish we had more of an idea of that storyline, because I find that to be much more intriguing than Christian Bale listlessly playing a priest in a time of war…
The Flowers of War comes out in Chinese theaters on December 16, though no U.S. release date has been set.
