The Grandmaster China Trailer

Finally, we have the official trailer for Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmasters, a Yip Man biopic starring Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi. This comes after a rain-drenched teaser trailer in February and news in July that the movie was still shooting. When The Grandmasters finally comes out, it will be roughly three years in production and post-production. For some additional perspective on how long the film has been in the works, The Grandmasters was in the planning stages before the first Ip Man film starring Donnie Yen was in development.

Despite the delays, The Grandmasters looks like it could be great. Since Leung is known for his acting rather than for his fighting skills, I wonder how good the wing chun in the film will be. (This is Tony Leung Chiu-Wai of In the Mood for Love, not to be confused with Tony Leung Ka-fai who appears in Tai Chi 0.) Yuen Woo-ping did the action choreography, so at the very least the fights should be solid.

The Grandmasters comes out in China on December 18th. While there is no international release date as of now, we can probably expect it some time in 2013 since it’s a Wong Kar-wai film.
