Trailer: The Impossible

Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Orphanage was an atmospheric, well-executed debut feature, and it left me wondering what the director had in store for the future. Based on this Spanish-language teaser for his next film, The Impossible, it looks like Bayona has taken on an ambitious sophomore effort.

Starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, The Impossible recreates the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004, which killed more than 230,000 people in 14 different countries. Here’s a translation of the text in the trailer:

On December 26, 2004, a devastating tsunami hit the coast of Southeast Asia. The lives of thousands of families around the world changed forever. This is the true story of one of these families.

The Impossible has been in post-production since February, with lots of time being taken for visual effects and film editing. We won’t see the finished film until fall 2012, but this teaser makes it look like an intense experience.
