By Based on Sara Gruen’s novel by the same name, Water for Elephants looks like the next big romance “feel good” movie that’s actually a tear jerker in disguise. Think Titanic if it took place in a circus as a flashback from a male’s perspective.
The story of Jacob Jankowski is told by Hal Holbrook (too many amazing movie roles to list) as a 93-year-old in a nursing home through flashbacks. His youth is represented by a nicely transformed Robert Pattinson (Twilight), and from there the tale of a veterinary student who drops out of school to join the circus as a vet begins.
Add Reese Witherspoon as the romantic lead and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) as the antagonist and you’ve got a promising movie with great casting. As for the mood and atmosphere, the trailer doesn’t disappoint. Director Francis Lawrence has done pretty well in the past with Constantine and I Am Legend, but this might be his first huge hit. Look for it out in theaters in April of 2011.
