Hey guys, it’s October! You know what that means: Halloween is right around the corner! As such, we will be bringing you some of our favorite horror film suggestions, in the hopes that they will lead to some sleepless nights. This is…Trick or Treat!
I am not much for the torture porn subgenre. It’s typically grounded in reality, so I can see why it could be ‘scary,’ but I prefer my horror with some tact. That being said, I feel in love with Mum & Dad the first time I saw it. It takes one of my least favorite subgenres, the aforementioned torture porn, and melds it together with one of my favorites: the ‘crazy family’ subgenre.
Mum & Dad tells the story of Lena, a lonely Polish immigrant eking out an existence as a cleaner at an airport in England. She meets the slightly over-bearing and quite possibly troubled Birdie and her brother Elbie, and after missing the bus home, Birdie invites/drags her to her family’s home. Needless to say, missing the bus quickly becomes the least of Lena’s worries.
Full of brilliant acting, gruesome effects, and some genuinely bewildering scenes, Mum & Dad shows us that the family that tortures together, stays together. Or something like that. In any event, Mum & Dad is certainly a fine example of both British horror and torture porn that doesn’t suck.
