Tron Legacy DVD/Blu-ray may have a teaser for Tron 3

It’s clear that Disney wanted Tron Legacy to set up a new franchise, and for the most part I think it worked. The film was a fun excursion filled with lots of eye candy. And while it may have “only” pulled in $330 million worldwide, that’s not bad at all from where I’m standing. So I won’t be surprised if Tron 3 gets greenlit.

A recent rumor lends credence to the idea of a third film. According to AICN, there may be a teaser for Tron 3 on the Tron Legacy DVD and Blu-ray. There are at least three scenes, the first of which is a confrontation between Alan (Bruce Boxleitner) and a real-life Ram (Dan Shor) about Ram’s “Flynn Lives” campaign. The second is a scene in which Quorra (Olivia Wilde) is hassled by press at ENCOM about having just spoken to Kevin Flynn. The final scene is vague, something about test shots for some plan discussion between Ed Dillinger (David Warner) and his son (Cillian Murphy), apparently only through text messages.

What’s interesting about these possible teasers is that Cillian Murphy’s character was barely present in Tron Legacy, simply named as a reference to his father’s involvement in the original Tron. He’s too big an actor and that is too interesting of a reference to chalk it up to just a cameo appearance. If feels like they’re setting him up to become a major part of the plot in the next film, hopefully with the return of David Warner.

It’s noted that these teaser scenes were actually shot before Tron Legacy‘s release, so it’s not entirely new material made after the film came out. Still, it’s interesting stuff, and the header image shows off the set of the first scene between Alan and Ram, with another image in the gallery. Hopefully this stuff does make the final DVD and Blu-ray, which is coming out on April 11 in the UK but still doesn’t have a US date. Would you be as excited for a Tron 3?
