Tyler Perry steals a good role from a talented actor

Tyler Perry has been cast as Alex Cross in I, Alex Cross. Cross, for those of you unfamiliar with the character, is a forensic psychologist in the mysteries of James Patterson. Mysteries will be solved, and such. Now, it’s always worth a groan whenever Tyler Perry gets acting work, but the real kicker? This film, which will reboot the film series started with Morgan Freeman playing Cross in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, wasoriginally set to star Idris Elba, with David Twohy directing. Now we get goddamned Madea with Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious, xXx) directing. Just swell.

Look, I can never like Tyler Perry and his maudlin drama and his fat-suit antics, but I try damn hard to respect him. While his movies are absolute trash, his studio in Atlanta opened up a lot of jobs in a pretty impoverished area, and it continues to do so with every ultra-successful Madea movie. As an actor and filmmaker, though, I hate his talentless guts. It probably pisses Sean Walsh off more, as he’s a big Cross fan and a bigger Madea Hater.
