UPDATE: Raimi has announced that he shan’t be coming back to helm the next installment. Mila Kunis has however said that everyone has signed up for “sequels” meaning that there’s likely more than one Oztacular iteration in store.

With Oz: The Great and Powerful releasing today in theater, Disney is apparently already planning a sequel to their just released film. According to Variety, Mitchell Kapner, who co-wrote the first film with writer David Lindsay-Abaire, has been tapped to write the follow up film.

We can obviously expect not to know exactly what the details are for the plot. It won’t be surprising to see Kapner use the original source material, L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” While this work is public domain, we won’t be seeing any of those iconic details from the 1939 film seeing as Warner Bros. still owns the rights to it.

The big question will be what are they going to do with the sequel? It will be hard to basically remake The Wizard of Oz since the original film still holds so much weight to it. Perhaps an off-shoot starring more of the characters from Oz: The Great and Powerful
