UPDATE: We’ve gotten more images! Most importantly, we have our first look at Slappy the Puppet, one of the standouts from the Goosebumps universe. Other than that, I have no idea what the other monsters are although one looks like The Haunted Mask.
I wasn’t too keen on the idea of a Goosebumps adaptation from the director of Gulliver’s Travels, but I’ve changed my mind. Jack Black is a talented individual, and I’d like to think he knows what he’s doing. In the film, R.L. Stine is a shut in author whose storybook monsters suddenly come to life and attack him. It sounds like it has more of a comedic, meta bent than we were led to believe.
And for Goosebumps, that’s exactly the right decision. While the books have always been creepy, it’s never been downright horrific. It’s always been just a little goofy (Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches that shrink you? An ooze that makes you a giant?), and if these first images of the film are any indication, that spirit remains alive. Goosebumps hits theaters August 7th, 2015.[via EW]
