Ghost in the Shell is shaping up to be an interesting project. An adaptation of Mamamune Shirow’s manga, Ghost in the Shell stars Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg policewoman who must help stop the latest wave of hackers and cyber crime. There’s a little more to it than that, but if this trailer’s anything to go by, we’ll want to know as little as possible going in.
In fact, that’s what makes this first trailer so great. It’s weird looking, has a couple of great nods to the original manga and anime adaptation, and ScarJo looks up to the task. I know there was a bit of frustration over the lack of an Asian female lead, but ScarJo is probably the best outcome in this situation. Not only does she have science fiction experience (Lucy), she had plenty of experience with inhuman characters struggling with their identity (Her, Under the Skin). If anyone can play cold and distant, yet somehow be involved, it’s her.
Ghost in the Shell releases March 31st next year.
