Watch this intense mock trailer for The Brothers Mario!

Many of you are probably familiar with the Super Mario Bros. movie made in 1993, starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper. Maybe you are one of those people who loved it for trying to make something of the beloved video game franchise that was unique in its own right, or maybe you criticized it for its “darker atmosphere and its deviations from the game franchise” (thanks Wikipedia!). I am frankly neither of these people, since I haven’t seen the movie since I was seven, and I don’t trust my seven year-old self to deliver a credible review. I believe I liked it and thought Samantha Mathis was purdy, so my little girl self was satisfied. 

In today’s abrasive, Frank Miller-influenced cinema, it’s hard to imagine a new adaptation of the Mario universe making a move back towards the classic feel and storyline of the games rather than making an even greater departure. Whether or not they’re serious, I think the makers of this Grand Theft Auto-esque fan trailer for a new Mario movie, called The Brothers Mario,may be on to something.
