We’re getting another Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie

After 20 years, the Power Rangers brand has gained a huge audience. Starting out with a team of “teenagers with attitude” the (now in its 21st season) show has since gone into space, lost galaxies, apocalyptic cities, magical worlds, to fights against demons, alien armadas, and even dinosaur men. Because fandom for the show has grown stronger than ever (with the older fans creating conventions and whatnot), Saban has teamed up with Lionsgate (The Hunger Games, Divergent) to produce a film based on the original Mighty Morhpin Power Rangers series (which technically means the first 3 seasons).

The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.

Although it’d make more sense to take their newest series, Power Rangers Super Megaforce or Power Rangers: Dino Charge, and turn it into a film, it seems Saban wants to connect with the older audiences by rebooting the show they know. It’s perfect since most of the kids who grew up with it are ironically loving jerks now. As someone who still watches the show 21 seasons later, I’m excited for this as long as it’s not too serious. There’s a fandom out there for a “darker” Power Rangers series and that’s just stupid. Nothing about spandex warriors says “serious.”

Really, you can reuse the six episode “Green With Evil” arc and I’m sure people would be good with this.
