By Last month, we reported on David Yates announcing that he was beginning to work on a Doctor Who movie in partnership with the BBC with a different Doctor entirely separate of the series’s nearly fifty years of continuity. At the red carpet at the BAFTAs, Yates reiterated that the film was very far away, having only just begun to find a writer to begin the script. That right there should tell you the film is at least five years ago in Yates’s mind.
THAT said, Steven Moffat, current Doctor Who showrunner, hit Twitter with some harsh statements about this early, ephemeral project: “To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot,” going on to say that Yates’s comments were off-the-cuff on a red carpet, commenting, “You’ve seen the rubbish I talk when I’m cornered.” Considering this man is the one the BBC has placed the entirety of Doctor Who‘s television future on, I’m more inclined to believe him than Yates. I’m still not 100% against the notion of a rebooted Doctor Who as a film, though I don’t think it’s a terribly good idea, but I’m happier with the notion of any film, if it happens, being in the hands of the folk producing the show for the BBC.
