X-Men 4 and 5 in active development, Deadpool is R-rated

With all the X-Men prequels and spin-offs in the works like X-Men: First Class, Wolverine 2, and Deadpool, I think most people took the original series for dead. Not so, says producer Lauren Shuler Donner! Obsessed with Film spotted in Empire’s most recent issue that a treatment for X-Men 4 – a proper sequel picking up from X-Men 3: The Last Stand, not another prequel or spin-off – has been submitted to Fox, who reportedly “love it.”

What’s more, Donner points out that this treatment for X4 “leads into X5,” indicating that Fox has plans to continue this series for quite a while. There’s no confirmation of who wrote the treatment, but Bryan Singer did happen to write the treatment and script for X-Men: First Class, plus the scripts for X1 and X2, so chances are good that he may be involved. Either way, it’s great news for mutant fans, even if future X-Men movies are likely to recast Magneto due to Ian McKellen’s age.

But what’s even better news, at least for me, is the confirmation that the long-in-production Deadpool spin-off will be an R script, “irreverent and violent.” The film will be a reboot, either pretending X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn’t happen, or mocking it somehow. “It’s insane, definitely comedy,” says Donner. “Right away, we’re out of the X-Men world.” Sounds like they’ve got their focus in the right place! Here’s hoping for some fourth wall-smashing quips.
