Longtime X-Men series producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently spoke to Empire Magazine about the possibility of a Gambit-focused X-Men film, starring Channing Tatum as the titular Cajun mutant. “I’m dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum,” said Donner. “He’s on board, and I have to get the studio on board.”
During an interview for White House Down, Tatum first brought up the idea of taking over the role of Gambit. “Gambit’s my favorite. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real.”
This doesn’t exactly count as official confirmation, but Donner has worked on every X-Men film since the beginning, so her word probably carries a lot of weight at Fox. It would also fit the studio’s plan of a Marvel Cinematic Universe-esque X-Men movie franchise. You know, the really ill-advised decision every studio with a superhero franchise is trying to make right now.
