Xavier Dolan to direct It’s Only The End Of The World next

Last year at the Cannes Film Festival, Xavier Dolan’s Mommy shared the Jury Prize with Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language, and now Deadline has confirmed that his next movie will be It’s Only The End Of The World (Juste La Fin Du Monde), with Marion Cotillard, Lea Seydoux, Vincent Cassel, Nathalie Baye and Gaspard Ulliel set to star.

Dolan was originally set to make his English language directorial debut next, with The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, but as production on said project won’t kick off until later this year, he decided to make World first. Production could start at the tail end of May, which means he has to run from his jury duties at the Cannes Film Festival to his set – because who needs sleep anyway?

The Quebecois directors says “the shooting for John F. Donovan has gotten me really excited but it’s not going before next fall, and I want to be on the ground again before we power the Donovan machine” He also says World works as a “bridge” between the genres of Mommy and The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.

It’s Only The End Of The World marks his sixth feature film, and second adaptation. The brilliantly intense genre movie, Tom at the Farm was based on a play by Michel Marc Bouchard, while World is adapted from Jean-Luc Lagarce’s play by the same name: “After 12 years of absence, a writer goes back to his hometown, planning on announcing his upcoming death to his family. As resentment soon rewrites the course of the afternoon, fits and feuds unfold, fuelled by loneliness and doubt, while all attempts of empathy are sabotaged by people’s incapacity to listen, and love.”

For those who follow Dolan, or adore him like I do, this fits his resumé perfectly, and shows tons of potential from the very first sentence.
