Zombies likely weren’t covered in the permission slip for the Little Monsters Red Band trailer

What do you get when you take one class of schoolchildren, one dedicated teacher, one Josh Gad, and then throw zombies into the mix? The answer would be the newest zombie comedy to come along, Little Monsters.

Little Monsters premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to positive reviews and was promptly snatched up by Neon and Hulu. The plot of the movie is simple enough. “A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies.” It is described as a team-up, but it seems clear that Lupita Nyong’o’s Miss Caroline is doing the heavy lifting here. She takes every effort to convince the kids that it is all a game and that they aren’t in real danger while trying to deal with the horrific situation they are in.

Turns out adding children to the mix in a zombie can be quite funny. Nyong’o already showed in Us that she can handle her own in a horror movie, but her sincere delivery shows she has some great comedy chops as well. Josh Gad as a kid’s TV personality is an itch I didn’t know I needed to be scratched until now. All the gore and profanity these children are subjected to should probably mess them up, but with Miss Caroline looking out for them, there’s hope for them yet.

Little Monsters will release in the UK on November 15. No US release date has been announced yet.
