Partnering with A24, Sofia Coppola’s next film On the Rocks today gets its first trailer, giving a look at the Billy Murray and Rashida Jones-led drama and dry wit Coppola has become known for.
Upon meeting up with her father Felix (Bill Murray), Laura (Rashida Jones) begins to express doubts over her happy marriage; her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) has been working a lot of overtime, and an affair is suspected. Goaded by Felix’s boldness, Laura and her father begin to investigate the Dean-situation, hoping for the best and expecting the worst, but all in all having a pretty fun time throughout.
The new trailer gives us a glimpse into what will no doubt be three terrific performances, Coppola always getting along with Murray in past collaborations on Lost in Translation and A Very Murray Christmas, and Rashida Jones positively exuberent in just about anything. Seeing Marlon Wayans mature from his early spoof-film years is great as well.
Looking to be another win for A24, On the Rocks will release this October to Apple TV+ and, pandemic-willing, theaters nationwide. The latter is, of course, a skeptical gamble given the current state of American theaters, but we should be able to give On the Rocks a shake, one way or another, by the end of the year.
