American McGee’s Alice to get TV adaptation written by David Hayter

In a completely out of left field announcement, Radar Pictures has confirmed that a TV show based on American McGee’s Alice will be entering production in the coming months. Based on the mature-themed action-adventure game from publisher EA, Alice will be penned by X-Men screenwriter (and the voice of Solid Snake) David Hayter in a partnership with Abandon Entertainment.

In a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter, Hayter said, “American McGee’s Alice and Alice: Madness Returns game series is a groundbreaking reimagining of the classic tale. It takes you into the heart of a corrupted Wonderland and throws light into shadowy corners the world has never seen. I am beyond excited to bring this world of madness and wonder to a global audience.”

Said to be a drama series, the show is part of EA’s expansion into the realm of the small screen as it looks to expand beyond video games. For those unfamiliar with the title, American McGee’s Alice was originally released in 2000 for Windows 98 and was a violent take on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Its namesake, American McGee, was previously a designer on legendary shooter Doom for id Software.

McGee added to Hayter’s statement by saying, “David Hayter brings imagination, experience, and stealth sneaking skills gained through successful missions in film, TV, and video games – a unique combination sure to make this adventure into Wonderland a successful one for the franchise and the fans.”

There’s no exact timeframe for when this show will materialize nor a mention of which platform it will wind up at. With McGee still attempting to get the third installment in his game series off the ground, this show could act as a catalyst to engage fans and show support for the games.
