Black Mirror: Bandersnatch trailer is all pixels and madness

Netflix just released the trailer for its Black Mirror event film Bandersnatch, and it looks pretty good. This is a rare feat for a horror movie about video games. Hellraiser: Hellworld this is not.

This is definitely giving some Polybius vibes, and it would be neat to see deft hands turn the urban legend into a cool work of fiction. I like 80’s style, though I do wonder how many more horror movies packed with shots of vinyl and VHS we can watch before the novelty wears off.

The plot has a young man in 1984 facing a mental breakdown while trying to translate a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game. Hopefully its themes of madness as a necessary tool in creating art and use of the psychedelic abstract images of retro video games will make for a striking and fascinating film.

We’ll get to find out soon enough, as Netflix has decided to surprise release it tomorrow, Friday December 28th.
