Deadpool is coming for the MCU

Deadpool

Is the Marvel Cinematic Universe ready for Deadpool? According to Marvel Studios overlord Kevin Feige, the answer is yes. With Steve Rogers no longer around to police harsh language, the Merc with a Mouth is set to bring his sarcastic, fourth-wall wit (and an R-rating) to a future phase of the ongoing MCU.

Feige confirmed the news earlier today, with filming likely not to happen until 2022. The script is being penned by two newcomers to the franchise, sisters Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux, who are both heavily involved with Fox’s animated series Bob’s Burgers and The Great North. Deadpool lead Ryan Reynolds is also involved in the writing process.

While it’s no surprise that a third film is coming (the first two films have combined for over a billion dollars worldwide), the eyebrow-raising comes from the confirmation that Wade Wilson is joining the MCU. The brash style and shoot’em up or slice’em up method doesn’t exactly fit in with the Avenger image Cap and Tony Stark cultivated, which should make his indoctrination even more fun to witness. If Nick Fury felt Tony Stark was too rash to join the Avenger Initiative, imagine what he’ll think of Deadpool.

With ownership red tape out of the way, bringing in the anti-hero to the MCU provides a peek into what the future could hold for ushering in others who had previously been held off by studio rights (looking at you, X-Men). In the meantime, it’ll be fun to see how Deadpool is introduced, and who he’s introduced to. Fingers crossed it’s the Guardians, given Peter Quill and Rocket’s penchant for trading jabs.

Thankfully 2021 brought a change of news compared to early last year, and now we can address the biggest question everyone wants to know: which body part Deadpool will lose and awkwardly grow back in the new film? We’ve already seen the tiny arm and the tiny legs, though unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a couple of years to find out.
