Depp and Hammer in Lone Ranger garb meet Navajo leaders

Johnny Depp has gone on record saying that with this remake of The Lone Ranger, he wants to “take some of the ugliness thrown on the Native Americans, not only in The Lone Ranger, but the way Indians were treated throughout the history of cinema, and turn it on its head,” but I’m honestly not sure if he’s doing that. The movie currently has the full support of the Navajo Nation, and they are even filming on the Navajo Reservation. These are images of the heavily makeup-ed Depp and Armie Hammer dressed as the embodiment of the white colonizer of the American West – the Lone Ranger – with leaders of the Navajo Nation during a recent meet-and-greet.

I am so unsure about the way that Depp is handling this (and that he’s even starring at all – are there really no Native American actors who wanted the part!?) and I’m unsure about the movie in general. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with this one.
