‘Extreme’ horror streaming service Midnight Movie Society shuffles into the pack this September

Rue Morgue and MVD Entertainment are joining forces to toss streaming bloodhounds a bucket of gore to gorge themselves on just in time for Halloween. This new service, dubbed The Midnight Movie Society, comes with its own bespoke twist–this is the streaming service for people who want the nasty stuff.

Differentiating itself from something like Shudder by announcing a focus on “extreme underground, cult, and taboo” material, The Midnight Movie Society seeks to elbow out some space in this  evermore absurdly crowded market. It sounds like a cool enough service, but they’d better come out swinging if they want a piece of the pie. I’m not sure how many horror fans will be willing to pay for two niche services.

Rue Morgue will curate more traditional horror, and MVD (whose catalogue includes films like Rondo and The VelociPastor) looks to fill the bulk of the service with its own content. No specific titles have been announced for the service just yet. It does promise “outrageous gore,” however, so I’ll be sure to keep my eye on it.

The Midnight Movie Society will run $4.99 a month or $47.88 a year and will launch on Friday, September 13 (naturally), 2019.
