F9 skids to another delay, still on for 2021

F9

It seems like the true fate of the furious is to continuously be delayed. Universal Pictures announced this morning that the upcoming F9 (which may or may not still be a two-parter) has been pushed back for the third time. If you’re worried that this means it won’t be making a 2021 release, you can rest easy. The film will miss Memorial Day weekend but is now slated to premiere on June 25, 2021.

F9 isn’t the only casualty here. Minions: The Rise of Gru, a prequel in the Despicable Me franchise, has been shoved out of 2021 entirely and will now open on July 1, 2022. I’m not sure there was any really waiting for that particular film, but your kids will have to do without the Minions for another year. I’m sure any parents reading this are positively thrilled.

It might be a little surprising to see studios acting so cautious now that COVID-19 vaccines are rolling out, but I appreciate the move. Instead of rushing to get everything back to normal like a certain state governor, Universal is playing things safe. It also has the benefit of giving its production studios more time to perfect these films, which should prevent any type of crunch from happening.
