By One of my favorite things to do in life is laugh. Ironically, comedies aren’t my favorite genre. Funny how that works, right? However, 2012 offered a wide range of comedy films. From a fake teddy bear doing sex with grocery store cashiers to a pair of almost-teenagers running away in the most innocent of ways, 2012’s LOLs, ROFLs, and LMAOs came in various ways.
Which film gave us more ROFLMAOOLs? For those uninitiated with hip, new internet lingo, that’s “Rolling on the Floor Laughing My Ass Off Out Loud.”
While Moonrise Kingdom didn’t supplant The Darjeeling Limited as my favorite Wes Anderson film, it definitely shows his growth at writing grander films. A period piece centering on childhood innocence and first love, Moonrise Kingdom was charming, yet still carried Anderson’s penchant for quirky dark comedy. It might not be as “pure” of a comedy film as the other entries, but what is on display was enough to help it net our Golden Pterodactyl. [Read the full review here.]
Safety Not Guaranteed was one of my favorite films from last year’s SXSW thanks to Aubrey Plaza’s elevation as a lead actress and the snappy writing directing from Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, respectively. 21 Jump Street was a film adaptation of the TV show of the same name led by the tag team tandem of Channing “Beefcake” Tatum and Jonah “Dietcake” Hill that helped showcase Tatum’s comedic chops. Pitch Perfect was held up by its strong female cast led by Anna Kendrick. Seth MacFarlane’s directorial debut, Ted, rounded out our nominations with its pairing of a CGI teddy bear and Mark Wahlberg with Mila Kunis offering hot actress support.
