Unscripted Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion is heading to HBO Max

0

Not content to let the fervor around The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air die down, HBO Max has announced that taping is set to begin soon on an unscripted reunion special for the hit ’90s show that put actor Will Smith on the map. Obviously Smith will be returning, but he’ll be joined by series stars Tatyana Ali (Ashley Banks), Karyn Parsons (Hilary Banks), Joseph Marcell (G), Daphne Maxwell Reid (the second Vivian Banks), and Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton Banks) with an appearance by DJ Jazzy Jeff.

The special will be directed by Marcus Raboy with Rikki Hughes serving as showrunner and executive producer. Hughes will be joined by Miguel Melendez, Lukas Kaiser, and Brad Haugen (representing Westbrook Media) as executive producers. Being that it is unscripted, there isn’t any specific plot to the episode: this will likely be the cast coming together to talk about their favorite memories and likely to honor the late James Avery, who played family patriarch Philip Banks.

With news of this reunion and talk of a “dramatic” reboot, it seems like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air still has some life left in it. I’ve always enjoyed the original series, even if it kind of loses steam in the final season. It was a slice of ’90s cheese that never forgot to be genuinely funny and heartwarming, unlike many of its contemporaries that feel incredibly dated. I’m not sure if we need to keep revisiting it, but I’m all for a reunion.
