James Gunn says a lot of stuff about Guardians 3

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is a long way off, but that doesn’t mean that director James Gunn isn’t getting things ready. He recently did a Facebook Live chat where he covered every topic under the sun, including reminding us that adolescent Groot will be showing up in GotG 3. However, like any good showman, he saved the best for last when he was asked if Richard Rider, aka Nova, might show up at some point.

“Yes, definitely. Nova comes up occasionally as someone we might use. One of the things I’m doing with creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it will take place after the next two Avengers movies and it will help to set up the next 10, 20 years of Marvel movies. It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters. It will be the last movie of this version of Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Damn, James Gunn. Slow your news breaking roll for a second. You just said more about the MCU in two sentences than almost everyone else involved in it does in a year. So we’ve got a possibility of Nova showing up, which is cool and all. But more importantly it seems Marvel means to set up Phase 4 with Guardians 3, meaning we’re going to get a much larger focus than the earth-centric heroes we’ve seen so far. Makes some sense considering the forthcoming Captain Marvel and the fact that Thor is heading out into the greater universe with Thor: Ragnorok. It also speaks to the stellar success of the Guardians franchise, which, if we all recall, started out as a major risk.

Finally, it seems that the team will be shook up a bit after 3 concludes. That makes sense, especially if we’re seeing the universe shake up, but you wonder who will leave. I’m guessing Star Lord is sticking around as Pratt is the face of the franchise, but maybe they’ll pull a big surprise and “kill” him off. Who do you want to see go, and who should come?
