John Logan talks Bond 24 and the return of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.

Sometimes do you just sit around and wonder why there isn’t more news about the next James Bond film, momentarily titled Bond 24? No? Well, I do and so it’s with great pleasure I bring myself (and you by proxy) news from screenwriter John Logan, who you may remember gave us Skyfall along with Sam Mendes. Logan says the first draft of the film is done and that the movie will carry on the themes explored in its predecessor. While not giving too much plot away he does hint that Bond’s rival Blofeld and S.P.E.C.T.R.E. may at least be hinted at.

There might be [a presence of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.]! Honestly, not being evasive, but the great thing about Bond is that I have fifty years of movies – 23 movies and all the Ian Fleming novels and short stories, all of which are fodder. And when I’m working on the new Bond I’m constantly going back to Fleming and the other movies – what are the bits and pieces, what are the resonances? One of the things we learned in Skyfall is that the audience really enjoyed those, they enjoyed when they saw the Aston Martin, they enjoyed when we had references to things they grew up with, either from Ian Fleming or from the other movies, and that’s always been a part of my thinking about Bond.

From the full interview at Empire it sounds like they’re going to be ratcheting up the film to be even bigger than Skyfall was, which should make Bond fans happy. My only worry is that they take too many steps back and don’t advance Bond forward by trying to be as reverential as Skyfall was. It worked once, lets move forward now.
