Julianne Moore cast as Alma Coin in Hunger Games movies

The cast for the Hunger Games movies reads more like an Oscar nominated drama than a series of science fiction films based on young adult novels. Lionsgate has been pulling top-shelf actors in left and right and today they’ve announced one more as Julianne Moore joins the cast as President Alma Coin, who doesn’t really show up until the third book and thus won’t really be showing up until the third and fourth film come out.

However, it’s a major role in those films and one that can could get quite interesting so it’s awesome that they got an actress of this caliber. She’ll be joining some other newly announced castings as Stef Dawson plays Annie Cresta,Natalie Dormer plays Cressida, and Evan Ross plays Messalla. Considering we haven’t even seen Catching Fire yet, it’s a bit insane to start getting excited for Mockingjay, but I definitely am. November of 2014 and 2015 need to happen this November through some sort of time loop.

SANTA MONICA, CA  September 13, 2013 – Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) announced today that four-time Academy Award® nominee Julianne Moore (BOOGIE NIGHTS, THE HOURS, THE END OF THE AFFAIR and FAR FROM HEAVEN) has joined the cast of THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PARTS 1 & 2 as President Alma Coin, the leader of the rebellion against the Capitol.

Moore will star opposite Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in the third and fourth installments of the global blockbuster HUNGER GAMES franchise, slated for release in November 2014 and November 2015, respectively.  She will join new cast members including Natalie Dormer, Stef Dawson and Evan Ross.

In addition to her four Oscar-nominated roles, Moore has previously starred in CRAZY STUPID LOVE, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, CHILDREN OF MEN and last year’s HBO political drama film GAME CHANGE, which netted her an Emmy®, Golden Globe® and SAG Award®. She will next be seen in DON JON, SEVENTH SON and CARRIE.
