Karen Gillan, Aaron Paul seeing double in sci-fi clone thriller, Dual

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d lost touch with reality during the lockdown, but for Karen Gillan’s character in Dual, things are about to get a whole lot stranger. Gillan is set to star as the lead in the satirical sci-fi thriller which, according to Collider, has her on a mission to kill her own clone.

The original screenplay from director Riley Stearns, whose 2019 feature The Art of Self-Defense was a winner on the festival circuit, tells the story of a woman diagnosed with a terminal illness who opts for cloning therapy. The therapy is initially intended to help her family and friends cope with her passing, but when she makes a miraculous recovery, she’s forced to do the unthinkable: to kill her counterparts in a court-mandated duel (geddit?)

Gillan, recently seen in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, is set to headline the film alongside Breaking Bad graduate and current Westworld star Aaron Paul. Jesse Eisenberg is also set to appear — he previously starred in Stearn’s The Art of Self-Defense, so the collaboration between them is bound to make for a strong screenplay. In addition, Hawaii Five-O’s Beulah Koale and Marriage Story’s  Martha Kelly will take significant roles in the film.

Producing this intriguing storyline will be XYZ Films, who have reportedly forecast the film’s production for the summer. While it’s difficult to speculate at this stage how the production process will unfold, negotiations to produce films are a promising indicator that the Hollywood model isn’t giving up just yet.
