Ken Levine doesn’t have a need for Bioshock movie

While speaking with Industry Gamers, Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine touched upon the progress on the Bioshock movie, a project that was once helmed by Gore Verbinski. When the project was seemingly dead in the water, Levine stated that the film was “definitely still in the conversation”. Now, not so much.

“We got very close to having it get made – we had a deal in place and a director. But for us there’s no burning [desire] to have a movie made just to get it made”. He added, “There are differences between games and movies, no doubt, but the movie has to draw from the same DNA in terms of the world and the story beats. But you know, we don’t have a need to get it made.”

Does this mean that a Bioshock movie will never happen? Probably not, but it does make me respect Ken Levine a bit more. While I’m usually the one arguing for adaptations and remakes (no matter how crappy they always turn out to be), I have to completely agree with Levine here. Bioshock is an amazing video game property because it is just that … a video game. To take a story whose major plot point plays off the fact that it’s a video game and transform it into a movie would not only lose it’s impact, but would be downright frivolous. I admire him for having some sort of integrity instead of simply cashing in. Kudos Senor Levine … for now.
