Monster Hunter actually looks like the game in this Chinese trailer

If there’s one thing the internet loves to do when it comes to film (and video game) trailers, it’s jump to conclusions about the quality without seeing the full context. Last month, Sony Pictures released a trailer for the upcoming Monster Hunter film adaptation, and most people were disappointed. It definitely looked like a piece of schlock, but it seemed to have some spirit from the series. As if to right that wrong, this new Chinese trailer shows a film that actually looks like Monster Hunter. Fancy that.

I won’t say that the acting or special effects are particularly great, but there is certainly some spirit from the series in here. Once the conceit of some military people getting sucked into an alternate dimension is out of the way, it appears as if Monster Hunter will lean into the absurdity that is the video games. You have Palico’s cooking meals, a ton of weapon types from the series, and Tony Jaa making weird jokes about how the monsters in-fight with each other.

I don’t know if any of this will be enough to sway the internet’s pre-conceived idea of what Monster Hunter should be, but I think it seems fine enough. It certainly plays more to the strengths of these titles than director Paul W. S. Anderson’s Resident Evil movies.
