Welcome to Keyhouse.

If you are unfamiliar with the property then let me help you with that. This house is home to the Locke family, who have lived here for centuries. It holds many secrets within its grounds. Be wary and keep your eyes and ears open. If you come across a key then take great care with it. You never know what it might open.

Locke and Key is a celebrated horror comic series by IDW that was written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez. It is partially influenced by Lovecraftian mythology and delves into a weird and engrossing story that has been in the process of being adapted for quite some time. It was initially planned as a movie series, FOX then had a TV pilot shot that was shelved, and then it was rumored to be going to Hulu. Netflix stepped in and finally got the project rolling. It will now be premiering on Netflix on February 7, 2020.

“After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death.  As the Locke children explore the different keys and their unique powers, a mysterious demon awakens — and will stop at nothing to steal them. From Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House), the series is a coming-of-age mystery about love, loss, and the unshakable bonds that define family.”

Locke and Key has been perfect for an adaptation for some time. It has the kind of atmosphere and story that will do better in a world where Stranger Things is already one of the most popular programs on the streaming service. The comic has won multiple Eisner awards, which are the equivalent of Oscars for comics, so you know the source material is a terrific groundwork to build a series. It should be interesting to see how much of the darker aspects make the transition to the series when it premieres as the comic got incredibly dark at times. The wait isn’t too far off now and then we’ll get to see Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode unlock the many secrets of the Keyhouse.

Locke and Key will premiere on Netflix on February 7, 2020
