Whereas the original Dark Crystal is a staple of many childhoods, for me it was perhaps a bit before my time. I only saw it within the past few years, and was of course impressed by the staple Henson wonder and production, but my adoration sort of ended with the credits. Whether Netflix’s revival of the beloved film sways me further doesn’t matter: Age of Resistance looks absolutely gorgeous.
Serving as a prequel to the film, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is a ten-part series set to debut on Netflix at the end of August, featuring “three Gelfling heroes on an epic quest to save their world.” Wonder how that works out…
Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel voice our heroes, with a tremendous supporting cast including the likes of Helena Bonham-Carter, Simon Pegg, Mark Strong, and Mark Hamill, among many others.
Really though it’s the art directors and puppeteers who are the stars here. I’m blown away by how colorful and imaginative everything looks, and can’t help but want to rewatch the original film to see if perhaps I might like it just a smidge more. I have time yet for a rewatch, with Age of Resistance dropping on Netflix on August 30, 2019.
