Patrick Star will host a talk show in a new SpongeBob spin-off

SpongeBob spin-off Patrick Star

In a continued effort to expand their Bikini Bottom antics, Nickelodeon has announced The Patrick Star Show, a SpongeBob spin-off that will feature the titular starfish as a late-night style TV host.

The series is said to take the form of a talk show, with a the focus being on the Star family. Bill Fagerbakke, who has voiced Patrick on SpongeBob Squarepants since 1999, will take up the iconic invertebrate’s role for the series, with other SpongeBob cast members said to return alongside new voices and characters.

This marks the second SpongeBob spin-off series greenlit at Nick alongside Kamp Koral, the CG-animated SpongeBob prequel series that would see the (more?) juvenile antics of SpongeBob during his time at camp. Formative years, those. Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins called SpongeBob the network’s “Marvel Universe,” citing the 20+ years the series has run, and its cementation in pop culture.

Meanwhile, Sponge on the Run, the latest SpongeBob feature film, has had a rocky road to screens after an initial delay from 2019 to the coronavirus-dominated schedule of 2020. Skipping a theatrical release, Sponge on the Run is set to stream on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix in other countries internationally.
