Sonic The Hedgehog 2 gets its first trailer

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

During The Game Awards tonight, Paramount Pictures unveiled the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Presented by actor Ben Schwartz (who voices the Blue Blur), we finally get to see Knuckles in action and the result is better than what I expected. I’ve always enjoyed Idris Elba’s work, but I wasn’t sure if he’d be able to make a cartoon character look menacing.

As for what else this trailer reveals, Jim Carey finally gets to look like Eggman from the video games. I understand the first film was an origin story for both him and Sonic, but it was kind of ridiculous that he looked more like Jim Carey in a lab coat instead of the iconic egg-shaped villain. I also love seeing Tails here, especially considering he retains his official English voice actress Colleen O’Shaughnessey.

For all of its shortcomings, the first Sonic the Hedgehog film was actually pretty decent. There were definitely some confusing changes from the source material, but the general attitude and tone of the film felt in line with Sega’s classic franchise. From what we can see with this trailer, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 will be following in the same vein as the original. Maybe it won’t be an all-time classic, but it should make for a decent enough time at the movies.
