By At the Superman 75th Anniversary panel most of the discussion was on the legend of Superman and the comic book itself, but we got to check out two things from the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release of Man of Steel, which lands on November 12. Despite what you think about what Man of Steel did to Superman it sounds like there’s going to be some great stuff on the release of the film for home viewing.
The awesome starts with a quick short that Zack Snyder and the creator of DC animated properties Bruce Timm put together. We got to watch it and it’s basically every bit of Superman awesomeness condensed into one minute of animation. The short starts with a pull out from Action Comics #1 and then dramatically flows through every iteration of Superman there’s been. It’s really cool to watch the animation styles sort of fade into one another as you go through the eras, and their take on all the live action portrayals is pretty spot on. I’m sure there’s a ton of head nods to Superman history that I didn’t pick up on, but there are definitely nods to notable moments like when Superman boxed Muhammad Ali or less notable ones like Turtle Boy Jimmy Olson.
The other part we got to check out was a bit of documentary, which was pretty much the talking heads you’ve come to expect from special features on DVDs. Nothing actually special there and considering the short will be broadcast on TV and most likely eventually viewable on YouTube I don’t think either are worth buying the Man of Steel Blu-ray for if you weren’t planning on it anyway. Definitely worth going out of your way to see the short, just not worth laying down money.
