Trailer for Gwen feels like The Witch in the best way possible

Gwen, a very eerie bit of art house horror due to come out of RLJE Films, couples with The Witch to teach the world one very important lesson: Don’t be a young woman with an accent coming of age on a farm. Your family will fall apart, your land will become useless, your horse won’t cooperate, and it’ll probably drive you nuts or something.

It’s a very important lesson, and I’m glad we have another gorgeous-looking movie to reinforce it. The trailer above just overflows with desolate landscapes, foggy exteriors, and lamp-lit darkness. It also includes a mine, which raises its spook-factor far above what The Witch could have possibly hoped to achieve.

From director William McGregor, Gwen sees a young woman trying to hold her home together after her father leaves, her mother falls strangely ill, and an aggressive mining company encroaches on their land. Sounds like a recipe for a meltdown, and I look forward to seeing it.

Gwen will hit theaters and VOD on August 16, 2019.
