Normally the Trailer Round-up takes place over the weekend as a way to gather up all the big movie trailers for the previous week. But because there was a comic convention or something last weekend, I held off in case anything big dropped. Good thing I did, because a new Hunger Games trailer went up. Also, I don’t like doing more than one task at a time.
The biggest trailer is obviously 12 Years a Slave. That film is going to win so many Oscars it’s not even funny anymore. Other notables include Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (with Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela), the second trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (which includes plenty of good looking people doing good looking things), Unforgiven, and Karmic Kong trailers for Riddick and Kick-Ass 2.
This week Trailer Round-up is also changing it’s format. I combined the “Comments” and “Verdict” into one since they basically amounted to the same thing. Hit the jump for the notable trailers released last week.
12 Years a Slave (October 18th)
Starring: Michael Masspenis, Brad Pitt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, and Dwight Henry
Synopsis: Solomon Northup was a freeman who was kidnapped and sold into slavery. He really doesn’t like slavery.
Verdict: Looks as good as a less bloody and more emotional Django Unchained should.
The Family (Malavita) (September 13th)
Starring: Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, Michelle Pfeiffer and Dianna Agron (!)
Synopsis: The Manzonis are a mafia family who relocates to Normandy under the witness protection program.
Verdict: Looks interesting enough for a rental. Of course I’ll just be there for Dianna Agron. She’s so pretty.
The Fifth Estate (October 18th)
Starring: Benedict Cumber-Blonde
Synopsis: Cumberbatch stars as Julian Assange, the dude who Wikileaked American secrets and then ran away.
Verdict: Why hello there interesting, but unsatisfying movie.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (November 22nd)
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Josh Hutcherson, and other beautiful people.
Synopsis: Beautiful people do beautiful things like murder each other in an arena in order to entertain rich people.
Verdict: Liar liar, pants on fire.
Kick-Ass 2 (August 16th)
Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Grace-Moretz, and Jim Carrey
Synopsis: Since Kick-Ass did things in the first movie, things are happening in the second.
Verdict: Sure looks like a sequel to Kick-Ass. Also what’s up with these 4 minute trailers?
Last Vegas (November 1st)
Starring: Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline
Synopsis: Old guys do old things in Las Vegas.
Verdict: May be good for an Early Bird Special.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (November 29th)
Starring: Idris Elba and Naomie Harris
Synopsis: A biopic following Nelson Mandela’s life from childhood until his election as South African president.
Verdict: It may be Oscar bait, but it seems that it’s a movie that’ll finally convince me Idris Elba’s a good actor.
Riddick (September 6th)
Starring: Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Katee Sackhoff, and lots of monster things
Synopsis: Riddick now finds himself against more monsters and mercenaries.
Verdict: I was little worried due to the low budget look of its trailers, but the extra scene here has lots of welcome and cool looking personality.
Unforgiven (Yurusarezaru mono) (September 13th in Japan)
Starring: Ken Watanabe
Synopsis: A Japanese remake of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven in which a samurai becomes a bounty hunter.
Verdict: Uh…I don’t know Japanese but stuff looks good.
The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu)
Starring: Talented Japanese actors
Synopsis: A “biopic” of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the Zero fighter plane in WWII plus awesome visuals.
Verdict: Once again it’s in Japanese, but it does indeed look several kinds of gorgeous.
