There’s a lot of romance surrounding New York in the 1970s even though it wasn’t necessarily the place you’d want to live. Crime, poverty, economic collapse, garbage strikes, tenement arson to collect insurance money.

Then again, the rent was affordable, and young local artists and bohemian transplants took to the city to make their own scene. It all meant the birth of hip-hop, punk rock, tagging, graffiti, breakdancing, and street art.

There’s been plenty written about the era in recent years, including Patti Smith’s critically acclaimed memoirs Just Kids and M Train and Will Hermes’ Love Goes to Building on Fire. Now Baz Luhrmann’s exploring that era on Netflix in The Get Down. Check out the trailer for the series below.

Here’s a synopsis: “Told through the lives and music of a ragtag crew of South Bronx teens, The Get Down is a mythic saga of the transformation of 1970s New York City.”

The Get Down stars Jimmy Smits, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks, T.J. Brown Jr., and Jaden Smith.

Still no official release date for the 13-episode Netflix series, but it will be out some time this year.
