Check out the first trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks

Have you been dying to watch Star Trek but without all that continuity or multiple timelines or seriousness thrown in? Well, CBS All Access has the not-kid-friendly solution for youStar Trek: Lower Decks is basically Rick and Morty but in space in Star Trek. The new trailer shows this off pretty well.

It makes sense that the series would look and sound a lot like Rick and Morty since its being helmed by Mike McMahan, who wrote for that series for an extended period of time. As is pretty obvious this series will focus on the lesser-known members of Star Fleet. You know the guys who mop up the holodeck after the bridge crew gets stuck in there for the umpteenth time. Or the people who have to clean up the alien slime after yet another space creature crawls through the ventilation system. I mean, someone had to remove Tribbles, right?

It actually looks pretty funny, especially if you’re a Star Trek fan. How people will shove this gag-filled series into their headcanon is a different question altogether but it does take place comfortably far enough away from any of the other series that maybe we can just consider it at a time period when the universe was really silly.

Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Eugene Cordero star as the four leads ensigns in the show. However, the best bit of casting is Jerry O’Connel voicing the show’s “number one.” He’s basically Riker but even more broed out and ridiculous. The real question is how he’ll top the Riker chair sit as the most masculine action ever to be performed in space.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will premiere on CBS All Access on Aug. 6, 2020.
