David Fincher and Robert Towne are developing a Chinatown series

Well if it has to happen, I suppose a Chinatown series from David Fincher and original screenwriter Robert Towne is the way it should happen. Word has broken that a series serving as a prequel to the Polanski classic is in development over at Netflix

Little is known about the potential series other than that it would focus on Chinatown‘s Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) in his younger years as a scrappy California gumshoe.

Clearly David Fincher has a good relationship with Netflix, with his House of Cards work serving as the streaming titan’s flagship title when they started to develop original content, and his current series Mindhunter recently releasing to a successful second season.

In addition, Fincher his feature film Mank premiering on Netflix sometime next year. It stars Gary Oldman as Herman Mankiewicz, the legendary Hollywood screenwriter best-known for his work on Citizen Kane.

The Chinatown series hasn’t yet been picked up for a full run, but wouldn’t be the first time we delve further into Towne’s sunshine noir world. The 1990 sequel to Chinatown, The Two Jakes, starred Nicholson and Harvey Keitel, though wasn’t as well-received as the original film. Stay tuned for further details.
