Director Tom Hooper says no 3D for Les Miserables

I am not a fan of 3D. Even after Martin Scorsese mounted a passionate defence of its historic validity as a cinematic technique when interviewed by Mark Kermode on his radio show last Friday, there’s no getting around that in its current form it is expensive, impractical, ugly to look at and cannot even be seen by certain people. King’s Speech director Tom Hooper apparently agrees with me, as he has ruled it out of his upcoming adaptation of Les Misérables. In his own words:

I slightly worry with 3D that some people will physically struggle with it. If you have a certain type of eyesight it can be more demanding than watching a normal movie. With a two-and-a-half hour film, I didn’t want to make something that anyone might think ‘That’s not for me, because I don’t like the medium’.

Tom, I salute you. Still probably won’t see your film, given how it is two and a half hours long and all about the French, but your common sense approach to this tiresome technology has made this particular grumpy cinemagoer just a little less… wait for it… pessimistic. What did you think I was going to say?
