Disney+’s Home Alone reboot nabs Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper, Rob Delaney

For those unaware, Disney is working on a reboot of Home Alone for its massively successful streaming service, Disney+. While that news seems to have flown under the radar somehow, we now have an idea of who will be participating in the reboot. According to Variety, Archie Yates (Jojo Rabbit), Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), and Rob Delaney (Hobbs & Shaw) are set to star in this re-imagining of the home invasion classic.

While simply recreating Home Alone in 2020 is an incredibly stupid idea -we have smartphones and wifi security cameras, for crying out loud!-, it seems Disney isn’t going for a straight 1:1 remake. As the report notes, Yates will not be playing Kevin McCallister (main character from the original), but someone inspired by the character. Kemper and Daleney aren’t even starring as his parents, which makes me wonder what the hell is going on.

Dan Mazer, director of the absolutely terrible Dirty Grandpa, is attached to direct with a script penned by Mikey Day (SNL) and Streeter Seidell (CollegeHumor). This sounds like a really crappy film already, but I guess we’ll just need to keep an open mind. Maybe something can be done with the concept, though perhaps it’s best to let this franchise stay in the past.
