Netflix releases first trailer for the Dragon’s Dogma anime

Flixist is only a few posts away from becoming a video game website. Earlier today, Netflix uploaded a trailer for Dragon’s Dogma, a new original anime based on the Capcom RPG. Taking a much more original approach to the story, this series will center its plot on a man named Ethan as he tries to get revenge for his family. Sounds an awful lot like the setup to a Harrison Ford film.

More important than a generic plot, this trailer shows us is how the animation will look. In still shots, everything isn’t so bad, but I really don’t know what to say here. It kind of resembles what Rooster Teeth does with RWBY and possibly even a game like Dragon Ball FighterZ, but it looks remarkably low-budget. Netflix was going for a CG look and I don’t think it works all that well.

Perhaps I expected too much from the initial announcement, but I’m not sure I dig everything. The silver lining is that Capcom is at least acknowledging that this series is popular, so maybe a sequel can finally get underway once this series hits Netflix.

Unless there is some kind of last-minute delay, we’re only a few weeks away from the debut. Dragon’s Dogma will be available on September 17, 2020, for an undisclosed amount of episodes.
