First trailer for Ben Zeitlin’s Wendy looks mystic and sweet

After premiering to critical acclaim and Oscar nominations, Beasts of the Southern Wild marked the arrival of a unique and clear voice in director Ben Zeitlin, with Beasts being his first feature film. Going dark for the rest of the decade, we finally have a look at his follow-up feature, Wendy, slated for release next year.

Billed as a reimagining of Peter Pan, the film’s official description would seem in keeping with Zeitlin’s low-key sense of magic present in Beasts:

Lost on a mysterious island where aging and time have come unglued, Wendy must fight to save her family, her freedom, and the joyous spirit of youth from the deadly peril of growing up.

Reimagining something as iconic as Peter Pan in such a tremendously human way seems right up Zeitlin’s alley, and certainly we catch gorgeous glimpses in the trailer that will no doubt make Wendy a big one to watch for 2020. Luckily we won’t have to wait for too much longer, with Fox Searchlight planning a theatrical release for Wendy on February 28, 2020.
