Flix for (Not So) Short: Y: The Last Man Rising

With progress on the Y: The Last Man film adaptation progressing at a snail’s pace, a fan film has recently emerged to satiate the comic’s fans. Entitled Y: The Last Man Rising, the “fan film” is written and directed by Christian Cardona, whose credentials include visual effects work on Black Swan, The Muppets, and Captain America: The First Avenger (amongst others) through the visual effects company Look Effects.

For those unfamiliar with Y: The Last Man, the series takes place in a world where everything with a Y chromosome is extinct, except for a man named Yorick and his pet monkey, Ampersand. A mysterious woman, Agent 355, is assigned to protect and guide him to a geneticist in hopes of figuring out what protected him from the plague. The short focuses on the early moments of the plague, culminating in a flash forward involving a moderately decent action scene involving Agent 355 and a few Amazon women. Curiously enough, Vida Guerra plays a role. I forgot she existed. The short also stars Rebecca Marshall (Saw 3D), Kent King (General Hospital), and Travis Quentin Young.

What do you guys think of the short? I’m of the vocal majority who feels that a 2-hour film wouldn’t do Y: The Last Man justice, preferring a long form TV show a la The Walking Dead. I definitely wouldn’t mind having Cardona at the helm… as long as Yorick is recast.
