Disney mistakenly lists when Mulan will hit Disney+ for free

Mulan

(Update: Variety has confirmed that Mulan will be available to all Disney+ subscribers on December 4, 2020. Disney updated its “Premier Access” FAQ today, September 2, to notify users of the plan, though hasn’t offered to decrease the price to actually entice a purchase. I’d suggest just waiting the few months.)

I feel really bad for some interns working at Disney right now. As spotted by eagle-eyed fans, people that don’t opt for Disney’s outrageous pricing for Mulan next week won’t have to wait too long to stream the film for free. The live-action remake will be hitting Disney+ for general audiences on December 4, 2020. That’s exactly three months after its “Premier Access” period.

The news broke from both Screen Rant and Disney fan site ED92. The story has since been picked up by IGN and other various Disney fan blogs. It was first spotted on the UK Disney+ page and was briefly on the US site before Disney removed the information. Obviously, this wasn’t meant to be seen so soon and is likely going to cost the company quite a bit of cash.

At the same time, the short turnaround isn’t even that unexpected. Mulan was originally meant to released in March of this year, so it’s not like there’s any additional mastering or editing to be done. The film is finalized and ready to go, not to mention it will be on Disney+ servers. There’s no need to lock it out for six-12 months, though marketing doesn’t want you to know that.

As I said, I feel bad for the interns here. They likely mistakenly left a certain box unticked and are now paying the price. At least their sacrifice won’t be in vain as you can save some cash instead of paying into Disney’s nonsensical pricing scheme.
