Nomadland and The Crown lead Golden Globes nominations

0

With Covid-19 delaying numerous films out of 2020, and with most major awards season darlings releasing now, most of the major awards circuits are only now just getting around to announcing nominees and the Golden Globes are no exception. Usually as an indicator for the Oscars, the Golden Globes are our first real look at what some of the major nominees actually are and what some of the competition for the season are going to revolve around.

In the case of 2020, it looks like in the film department it’s going to be a battle between Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman and Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland earning nominations for Best Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress in a Drama. Both films are excellent in their own ways and it’ll be interesting to see how they compare against one another. On an unrelated note, I find it weird that Hamilton received two nominations, one for Best Comedy/Musical and for Best Actor in a Comedy not because it isn’t good, but because the film is just a recording of a Broadway show. I don’t know, I’m not the one who decides on Golden Globe nominees, but that seems like an odd choice.

On the TV side of things, The Crown leads with six nominations followed closely by  Schitt’s Creek with five. Small Axe earned only two nominations, but I would assume a lot of people didn’t really know how to classify Steve McQueen’s five-part series. But if all of that sounds too posh and high brow for you, The Mandalorian scored a nomination for Best TV Drama, so there’s that!

Really, there’s a lot to dissect with this year’s Golden Globe nominees and trying to see how they react to nominees for previous awards shows last year. The Oscars last year got particularly nasty with the immediate backlash to its list of nominees, but this doesn’t seem like the Golden Globes over correcting due to the Academy’s mistakes. It just seems like they’re nominating the best in each category, as it should be.

The strange one. The one born and raised in New Jersey. The one who raves about anime. The one who will go to bat for DC Comics, animation, and every kind of dog. The one who is more than a tad bit odd. The Features Editor.
