Rise of the Skywalker drops hard while others jump up

To start, lets be clear about one thing: just like every other Star Wars movie The Rise of Skywalker made a lot of money. It had a stellar Christmas week and even broke some records. However, its second weekend saw a hard drop of 59 percent giving signs that it may have the same fate as The Last Jedi , suffering from greater diminishing returns than the studio would like.

The film pulled in $72 million, which is a lot of money, and helped it surpass the box office of its predecessor after the same amount of time, however the critical reception and mixed reaction from audiences seems to be dinging it. More to the point, Disney doesn’t want all this negativity floating around their franchise, especially at its conclusion.

On a smaller scale, Little Women, debuted fantastically, which should help its Oscar dreams a lot. The movie brought in $16.52 million over the three day and an even better $29 million over the five-day weekend that includes the holidays. Uncut Gems also opened wide this week and gave A24 an impressive win. The box office on this one could actually propel Sandler into awards contention given he’s been mostly ignored by early voters.
